Successful Clipping of Giant Internal Carotid Artery Aneurysm at Mahanandan Super Speciality Hospital

Greater Noida, 10th April 2025 In a remarkable demonstration of advanced neurosurgical expertise, the Department of Neurosurgery at Mahanandan Superspeciality Hospital successfully performed a highly complex surgical procedure to clip a giant internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysm in a 26-year-old patient. The case presented significant challenges due to the aneurysm's size, its location, and the associated risks to surrounding critical neurovascular structures.

The patient presented with persistent headaches and visual disturbances, prompting detailed diagnostic imaging, which revealed a giant ICA aneurysm. Owing to the aneurysm's proximity to the optic nerve and brainstem, a multidisciplinary team led by Professor Dr. R.C. Mishra, Chairman and Chief Neurosurgeon at Mahanandan Hospital, along with Dr. Nikunj, Neurosurgeon, opted for microsurgical clipping-a definitive but technically demanding treatment modality.

The procedure was performed using high-magnification microsurgical techniques and intraoperative neuro-monitoring, allowing the surgical team to safely navigate around vital neurovascular structures. A titanium clip was successfully applied to isolate the aneurysm from the brain's blood circulation. Postoperatively, the patient was managed in the neuro-intensive care unit, where they have made an excellent recovery with no new neurological deficits.

The anaesthesia and neurocritical care team, comprising Dr. Prasanta Borthakur and Dr. Abishek Deshwal, played a pivotal role in ensuring patient safety during and after the procedure.
